    Dear Amandine,

I have a quick question ahead of next week’s meeting. I’ve just received the exchange rate forecast from the analysts-they’ve managed to (1)do the job a bit earlier than scheduled. Originally, they weren’t due to (2)send me it until after next week’s meeting, so based in that, I hadn’t put the matter on the agenda. But since we now have the forecast, it would obviously make sense to discuss it when we (3)meet. I’m aware there’s lot to (4)cover in the meeting, but if we can approve the forecast in right away, rather than having to wait another month before the next meeting. So would you have any objections if we squeezed that item onto the agenda?

I’ll be out of the office Thursday and Friday, so if you could (6)reply when your thoughts before the end of tomorrow, that would be great. If you’re happy, I can then circulate a revised agenda, together with copies of the forecast, so everyone can take a look at it before the meeting.

    Thanks, Pablo

    (1)     Get the job done

    (2)     Get in to me

    (3)     Get together

    (4)     Get through

    (5)     Get on with

    (6)     Get back to me

Whose job is it to fix the target?

You may set/determine/establish the target for yourself, or the target may be imposed on you by superiors.

    How realistic is the target?

Can the target be reached? Is it realistically attainable/viable/achievable/doable/possible to do? Or, are you being too optimistic, and setting an unviable/unachievable goal? You need to make the target challenging. But, clearly, there’s a difference between asking a lot(being demanding), and asking too much(being overly demanding). It’s important to remember that, while realistic targets are motivating, unrealistic ones are demotivating, as there is no way of averting failure: it will be inevitable from the word ‘go’. People tend to perform best when they are slightly stretched. But if they’re pushed beyond that point, and feel overstretched, performance will take a nosedive. The whole idea of target is to boost productivity. Unrealistic targets are counterproductive/unproductive they defeat the object of setting targets.
